Editors' Note
Artistic Intelligence was created as a collaborative effort between Davis Allred and Hailey Warden for an English-2010 class. The main purpose of this blog was to convey a variety of viewpoints about artificial intelligence, specifically in the field of art. Using written pieces (essays, discussion posts, etc.) from the semester, Artistic Intelligence provides a large array of aspects centered around artwork AI. This blog connects with the art world, new developments and facets of artificial intelligence, and the connections between the two. It also discusses the potential dangers of AI and why you might not need to worry. Anyone interested in art, AI, and everything in between may be interested in checking out Artistic Intelligence.
Artistic Intelligence touches on a variety of topics. From new developments in artwork AI to the threats they pose to artists, one can learn about artwork AI from many different perspectives. This blog discusses deepfakes and their impacts, as well as how art created by artificial intelligence systems is regarded by artists. There are posts by the individual authors, as well as a collaborative opinion piece. Between the different authors, one can view many different rhetoric, layout, and writing styles. The information being presented encompasses a broad spectrum of the field of art and its connections to artificial intelligence.
Within the blog, you will find short-form posts as well as essays. It is recommended that you start with the essays as they will provide you with a better understanding of what this blog is centered around. The essays can be accessed via the “Essays” tab at the top of the home page, or with the “Essay” label on the sidebar. Once you’ve read those, you’re welcome to browse the content of this blog in any order you like. If you’d like to view the works of a single author (either Davis or Hailey), you can select the “Posts by Davis” tab or “Posts by Hailey” tab. If you want a peek into the authors’ workflow, check out the “Our Reflections” tab.
Due to this blog being created in a class-setting, a lot of the posts do not follow typical blog-style layouts. There are posts that contain many different writing pieces from over the course of the semester that have been adapted and revised to fit within the context of the blog. In tandem with the classwork, there are also posts designed specifically for the blog, which include research not conducted directly with classwork. Some posts will take a more broad view of AI as a whole, others look in depth at specific AI systems that have been developed. Within the blog posts are links to other resources that are referenced or relevant to the post, so if one is interested they can dive deeper into the facets of artwork AI systems.
Artistic Intelligence represents a collaboration of art and technology through our own collaboration as partners. It has been a pleasure collaborating with each other, our classwork, and further research to create this blog about AI in the art world. We hope you find our work as engaging and insightful as we did ourselves, and, if you enjoy the content of this blog, we encourage you to continue your own investigations into AI.
